On September 12th, the City of Niagara Falls had a grand opening for the new tennis courts at Chippawa Lions Park. The two acrylic-coated courts are the first new courts to be built in Niagara Falls in many years. It’s a great step forward for tennis in Chippawa, and indeed for the entire city.
Kathy Carter led the special event, which included a ceremonial group serve and a feature pro-am tennis exhibition. Kathy works with the City of Niagara Falls through a partnership agreement, providing tennis lessons and kids’ tennis camps in the municipal parks. The shortage of quality courts has hindered those efforts, so Kathy is very pleased to have Chippawa back in her rotation.
The Chippawa Lions Club serves as custodian of the park, and its members lobbied the city’s councillors to rebuild the tennis courts. There are several Lions Clubs parks throughout the Niagara Region, some of them with tennis courts. As well as Chippawa …. Fenwick, St Davids and Pt Dalhousie come to mind. Tady Saczkowski had the great idea of setting up home-and-home games among those parks, or perhaps holding a tournament for the kids who play in their neighbourhood Lions Park courts. We’re very appreciative of the support for tennis (and for all kids’ recreational play) from the Lions Clubs.
When the City of Niagara Falls surveyed its residents last fall regarding the sport of tennis, the positive response exceeded expectations. The message came through loud and clear that more and better public tennis facilities would be a big plus for the city. Let’s hope the new Chippawa courts are a strong beginning, with lots more to come.
Thanks to Harrow Sports and to Wilson Sporting Goods for support of the grand opening event.
