Each fall, the high schools in our area conduct playdowns to determine Zone winners and then SOSSA winners. Players who finish in first or second place in both the Senior and the Senior Open divisions are eligible to advance to the OFSAA provincial championships at the Aviva Centre in May 2018. The schools are fortunate to have the use of the 8 courts at Welland TC for their competitions.
Ideally, these events would be the culmination of active tennis programs in our Niagara secondary schools. However, there are few schools that have municipal tennis courts within their orbit and who have a staff member with knowledge of tennis. Among the exceptions is A.N.Myer Secondary School in Niagara Falls. The school has a tradition of supporting student athletes in all sports, with many graduates earning scholarships for their university education. The school added a combination tennis/basketball complex last year.
The Zone playdowns were managed by Mike Robinson, with matches on September 19, 21, 26 and 28. The number of students involved was over 150.
Winners from the Niagara area were joined by winners from the Hamilton area for the SOSSA tournaments. They were managed by Milena Matijevic, with support from Mike and Mary Jane Robinson. The Senior events were played on October 4th …. a total of 75 matches, which wrapped up just before the rain began. Congratulations to all the players from Niagara who were among the medal winners, and good luck to those who will be advancing to the OFSAA round in May.
